Norma, the Architect

Norma Merrick Sklarek (1926–2012)

Norma Sklarek was a powerhouse of firsts: the first Black woman licensed architect in New York and California, and the first to own her own firm.

Why She’s a Konstellation Icon:

  • Large-Scale Force: While many women were pushed into residential design, Norma tackled the big stuff—terminals at LAX, the US Embassy in Tokyo, and massive shopping centers.

  • The Production Specialist: She was legendary for her ability to manage the technical production of massive, complex projects, ensuring they were built to perfection.
