The Master of Domestic Engineering

Lillian Gilbreth (1878–1972)

Lillian Gilbreth was known as the Mother of Modern Management. She was an industrial engineer and psychologist who focused on how to make physical work more efficient and less taxing on the body. While she worked on massive industrial projects for GE and Macy’s, she also turned her technical eye toward the home. She is the reason your kitchen is laid out the way it is today.

Why She’s a Konstellation Icon:

  • Motion Study: She and her husband pioneered motion study techniques to eliminate wasted movement in the workplace, making heavy labor safer and more efficient.

  • The Work Triangle: She invented the "work triangle" for kitchen design, optimizing the space between the sink, stove, and refrigerator to reduce physical fatigue.

  • Ergonomic Design: She focused on how the human body interacts with tools and environments. Whether you are in a warehouse or a workshop, her engineering principles are what make your workstation functional.
