The Desert Queen
Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter (1869–1958)
If you’ve ever been to the Grand Canyon, you’ve seen Mary Colter’s work. She was the architect for the Fred Harvey Company and the Santa Fe Railway, creating the "National Park Rustic" look.
Why She’s a Konstellation Icon:
Rugged Design: She didn't want buildings to look "new." She used raw stone and rough-hewn wood to make structures look like they grew out of the earth.
The On-Site Perfectionist: She was known for being incredibly "hands-on," often climbing through construction sites in the desert heat to ensure every stone was placed exactly where she wanted it.
